GO TRI Local off to a successful start

Published:

The first pilot got underway in Cambridge at the weekend with 23 adults and juniors taking on a duathlon in Milton Country Park.

GO TRI Local Milton Country Park, which is one of three national pilots for the initiative that aims to support new people into multisport activity, saw 12 juniors and 11 adults take part with only one of the adults having taken part in multisport before.

Bringing regular participation opportunities to the local community, the event will take place in the park once a month and follow the same course to allow participants to build their confidence in the sport and track their progress over time.

There were separate distances for adults (1.5km run, 4.25km cycle, 1km run) and juniors (1km run, 2.5km cycle and 500m run), providing an accessible and achievable challenge for newcomers to the sport.

GO TRI is British Triathlon’s introductory programme to help make the sport accessible to all, with GO TRI Local the latest offering to support people in taking their first steps into the sport in a fun, non-competitive environment.

Helen Marney, Director of Development at British Triathlon, said: “We’re really excited that the first GO TRI Local pilot got off to such a great start at Milton Country Park. The initiative is all about bringing the sport to the heart of local communities and we’re so pleased that 23 newcomers took up the opportunity to get involved.

“By providing regular opportunities for people to take part, we can’t wait to see how GO TRI Local helps more people get into swim, bike, run for the first time.”

Organiser of GO TRI Local Milton Country Park, Beth Holland, said: “It was lovely to see so many happy faces in the sunshine at the end of the event. It always feels like a real success when you see the sense of achievement and smiles on the participants faces. That’s what we do it for!

“The event worked really well from our point of view with it feeling very safe in Covid terms, and we were pleased with the course and the layout of the event on the day. Really looking forward to the next event at the end of next month and seeing these smiling faces return as well as others. We really do feel lucky to be a GO TRI Local provider.”

Alongside the pilot in Cambridge, there are two further pilots taking place in Leicestershire and Hertfordshire. The second of the pilots gets underway on the evening of Wednesday 4 November at Mallory Park, Leicestershire.
