Former Chair and President of British Triathlon Ian Howard received his MBE from Princess Anne, The Princess Royal, in a ceremony at Windsor Castle.

Howard, who was nominated in the King’s Birthday Honours list, was recognised for his incredible support and contribution to growing triathlon in the UK after competing in the first British Championship in 1983.

Since then, alongside representing the Great Britain Age Group Team, he has held various positions at British Triathlon (Chair and President, 2013-2019), Europe Triathlon (Vice President, 2003-2016) and World Triathlon (Board Member 2016-present).

Reflecting on the ceremony he said: “: “Our sport relies on its volunteers, and I see this award as recognition of the work of the team of Volunteers who have supported our sport in all kinds of different ways and helped it grow over the last forty years since the governing body, then called the BTA, was formed.

“We have had a wonderful day, and it was humbling to receive the award alongside so many distinguished recipients.”

British Triathlon CEO, Andy Salmon said: “I speak on behalf of the triathlon community here in Britain and give a huge congratulations to Ian on receiving this award.

“I have had the pleasure of working closely with him during my time at British Triathlon and his passion for the sport is clear to see. It’s fantastic that his dedication to the sport and helping it grow over the last 40 years has been rewarded in such a way.”
