Swim BIKE Run: How to Prepare for Your First Bike Ride [M-Check]

Published:

Just like that magnificent bod of yours, your bike will creak less and work better if you look after it properly.

It is your trusty steed, so give your bike a little TLC before you set out on your first adventure.

An M-check takes a matter of minutes and will ensure you stay safe and avoid having to fork out for costly repairs.

But what exactly should you be looking for?

  • Loose or missing parts

  • Dents and damage

  • Rust and general wear and tear

Don’t let all the moving parts and shiny bits intimidate you! Bikes are pretty simple once you break them down into sections.

How to complete an M-Check:

Place your bike in a stand or lean it securely against a wall. Starting at the front hub, guide your eye in an M shape up and down until you reach the rear wheel.

1.FRONT-WHEEL

It should be tightly fitted with the quick-release lever securely closed. If your wheels are not quick-release, inspect the nuts on both sides and make sure they are secure.

2.FRONT TYRE

Give it a squeeze. It should be nice and firm. If it feels a bit soft, give it a pump.

3.FRAME

Look closely to see if there are any cracks or signs of damage, especially at the point where the frame meets the head tube.

4.BRAKES

Your brake lever should not pull against the handlebar grip. If it does, loosen the brake cable anchor bolt and tighten the cable up again.

5.HEADSET

Grasp the head tube firmly with one hand and apply the front brake with the other. Watch out for rocking and listen for clicking in the bearings.

6.STEM

Your front wheel and stem should not move independently from one another. If they do, tighten the bolts and handlebar clamp. Check they are secure by grasping the front wheel between your knees and twisting the handlebars.

7.PEDALS

They should spin smoothly without creaking. If they don’t, tighten your cranks.

8.CHAIN

Keep it clean and oiled. Apply oil sparingly to avoid picking up more dirt.

9.SADDLE

Check your seat is in the correct position. It should not exceed the limit marked on the seat post. Once you are happy, tighten it into place.

10.TYRE

They should be nice and firm. If they are feeling a bit soft, give them a pump.

11.SPOKES

Each spoke should be of equal tension. You can test them by plucking them with your finger and listening to the sound that emanates.

12.BACK WHEEL + TYRE

Repeat steps 1 and 2!

A few minutes before you set off is all it takes for a lifetime of happy riding!

Get out, explore, and discover how great life can be on two wheels.
