Here at Triathlon England we are proud supporters of Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign to celebrate the fantastic females we have within our sport.
From those just embarking on their triathlon journey to our elite competitors competing across the globe, they each started somewhere and have their own personal goals.
We hope to inspire you with a range of stories from the women that bring our sport to life – YOU.
Susie, a 42 year old mum of two, decided that 2015 will be the year she takes on the triathlon challenge in the form of GO TRI – low-cost, short distance triathlon events taking place across the country. Overcoming obstacles that prevented her from taking part in physical activity, her sights are now firmly set on reaching the finish line.
“At the end of 2013 I had surgery to fix a knee injury that had stopped me doing sport for over 20 years. At that point I was very unfit and knew that I had a long road of physiotherapy ahead of me”.
She considered her options and decided that triathlon was the solution. The ease of just needing a pair of trainers, a bike and the wide outdoors to start her off, Susie soon got the tri bug.
“I decided to set myself the challenge for a number of reasons. My injury has stopped me doing so much over the years but I now feel I have been given a second chance... and I have a lot of catching up to do!
“Secondly, I’m a firm believer in setting goals. I needed a goal to aim for to motivate myself to keep up my new found fitness regime.
“Lastly, and most importantly, I want to show my children that you don't have to be the best at everything, but you can achieve anything if you set your mind to it and work hard.”
Susie is also a trustee of a charity and will be using her triathlon challenge in order to raise money for it..
She hopes that GO TRI is just the beginning and plans to take on a longer distance triathlon in the future.
“Following my injury, I had resigned myself to the fact that I would never be able to do sport again. I am delighted and very excited to be taking on my GO TRI challenge as I never believed anything like this would be possible. I’m even amazed at how much I love the training!”
