Local Lad's Call up to The Talent Squad

Published:

Sam Hart (17) has been named in the Triathlon England Talent A Squad for 2018. The South East are very proud of Sam especially the South East Acadmey coach Sarah who said "Sam's selection is a just reward for his dedication to Triathlon. Combining his studies well with his sport he has been a shining example to our academy of what can be achieved with consistent progressive hard work, while displaying a genuine love for what he is doing which is perhaps the most important of all."

Here is a quick interview with Sam to find out a bit more about him.

Name: Sam Hart

What is your role in triathlon?  Athlete

What is your favourite discipline? Swim, Bike or Run? Running for sure. Before I got into triathlon I was a runner and would compete for my local club (Team Kennet AC) in league matches in cross country and track and still do to this day. I enjoy the simplicity of the sport and that you can do it pretty much anywhere.

What is your least favourite discipline? Swim, Bike, Run? I enjoy every discipline so I don’t think there is one that stands out as being my least favourite. If I had to pick one thing about my training that I didn’t enjoy as much it would have to be strength and conditioning sessions as they are not always the most exciting of sessions!

What made you interested in triathlon? I loved watching races on TV such as WTS races and the Olympics and thought it looked interesting mixing 3 sports together. I remember asking my parents if I could enter a race that same year and loved it.

How did you start your triathlon journey?

My School entered me into the schools biathlon when I was 10 years old and from there I joined a swimming and athletics club in order to train for it. I was fortunate that my athletics club doubled up as a triathlon club meaning I was helped with training and basic skills quite early on. From there I joined my regional academy a few years later and started to compete in more national standard races as well as train across three sports instead of just running!

What motivates you when you feel like giving up?

My goals and ambitions -It helps having a bigger goal to focus on when you’re demotivated as it gives you something to look forward. Also my training partners motivate me as they help push you on as well as give support knowing that everyone has times where they don’t feel like doing something.

What has been your best moment in Triathlon?

Winning Bronze at this years Youth European Championships in Lithuania. To finish my first international race with a medal and to complete a British clean sweep at the same time whilst executing a good race was an amazing moment.

What advice would you give to someone who is looking to take on a triathlon?

Just to give it a go! Triathlon is a fast growing, friendly sport with something for all ages and abilities. If you have a local club ask if you can try it out and from there they can help with which races to look for.

And finally how do you feel about being selected for the Triathlon England Talent Squad?

I feel honoured to be selected and to receive the level of support I do motivates me further to achieve my goals.

We wish Sam all the very best and will be following his progress!
