Making the junior race series tick

Published:

Liz Scott is the Regional Co-ordinator for the South East Junior Race Series which is in full swing with events taking place throughout the year.

“My first role on the [South East regional] committee was secretary,” Scott commented. “Then our junior race series co-ordinator was stepping down and, given that at this time I was working with young athletes as Lead Skills School Coach for South East, it made sense for me.”
With events permissible across the Home Nations, the South East Junior Race Series is up-and-running for 2021 with a full calendar on the cards.

“I am delighted to say that in the South East we have a full series running,” said Scott. “There are very few regions, if any, that are in this position, so we are very fortunate. This is due to the willingness of our race organisers to become involved and stay involved.

“In my role, I benefit from the support of other volunteers in the region. Before each  event, I liaise with the race organiser and the Technical Official and after the event I compile the race results and work out the points.”

Volunteers’ Week took place this year from 1-7 June, promoting and recognising the work of volunteers and opportunities to volunteer. Scott is keen to recognise the importance of volunteers to the series, as well as to events and triathlon in general.

“Volunteers are indeed the backbone of the series,” she added. “Series events need Technical Officials to support the young athletes and parents in learning the rules and providing a safe and happy environment for all.

“Race organisers need volunteers to act as marshals for example. Having sufficient marshals can make a big difference to the success of an event and the experience to the children that is delivered.”

UK Coaching Week took place from 7-13 June, celebrating and supporting coaches across the country for all they do. As well as coordinating the junior series, Scott is also a coach and knows the importance that coaches can play in the development of young athletes.

“Most coaches in our junior clubs are volunteers and it is these coaches that inspire our young athletes and hopefully, ignite a passion for sport in general,” she said.

“Our junior races are where the young athletes can have fun racing. Participating in fun and competitive racing plays a crucial role in maintaining a love of the sport, provides goals and those special moments that can influence a child’s personal and sporting development.”
