Open water training in Cornwall

Published:

On Saturday 12th May a Novice Open Water Session was held at Towan Beach in Newquay. There were two sessions 1330-1500 for Novices and 1500-1630 for Intermediate swimmers.

The novices arrived at Newquay Leisure Centre and spent 20 minutes running through some of the basic theory of Open Water Swimming. In fact several of them had experience of swimming in the sea & lakes. There were only 4 who had no experience. They then got the minibus down to the beach where they were met with the RNLI. The sea was 2ft waves, choppy an on shore breeze. The athletes were in the water for 50 minutes and swam between the buoys.  They were coached from in the water so the coach could stay with the less confident swimmers all the time.

The session involved confidence, sighting and breathing practice and also a little stroke development.

The second group then arrived and after a short briefing went back to the beach. This group had more Open Water experience. These athletes were coached from  the RNLI dinghy. The group swam between the two buoys again. We were in the water for around an hour and developed speed as well as a little distance swimming. Also they did drafting and sighting techniques.

All the athletes gained a lot of experiance and want to come back for more.

Information will be published here for future events.
