Tony Smalley recognised for his engagement

Published:

West Midlands region Technical Official Tony Smalley received two awards in quick succession to recognise his contribution to triathlon as an official.

Tony received the prestigious  Leigh Day British Triathlon Official of the Year 2016 award at the British Triathlon Awards, which were held in Leeds in November. Just a week after, Tony's contributions to officiating were also recognised at the West Midland's Triathlon Awards.

A triathlon official for 6 years, Tony had a highly committed 2016 race season where he officiated at no less than 17 events from local club races all the way through to National Championship events. Never tired of learning, Tony completed his Motorcycle Official training as well as the National Technical Official qualification over the past 12 months. He can regularly be found at local novice training events, carefully explaining the complex rules of triathlon to  facilitate a smooth and enjoyable race experience for newcomers.

The 2016 season was not all sunshine though. Tony's interpersonal and conflict resolution skills provided him with a good foundation when he had to handle two difficult race situations, where family and friends of those affected highly praised Tony's support in a stressful time.

Many congratulations, Tony, for your great achievements and the well deserved awards!
