Meet Harry Butterworth

Published:

Harry is new to Triathlon but performed incredibly well this year and qualified for the IRC Team.

This was my first full season taking part in the Yorkshire Junior Triathlon Series so I did not really know what to expect from the races. All of the events were well organised and each event was different to the other, so all of the races were interesting.

I didn’t really have my sights on any particular goals during the season, I just wanted to take part in the races and see how things went. I did well in some of my races and not so well in others. I had a pretty successful season though and I was delighted to be invited to represent Yorkshire at the Inter-regional Championships at Mallory Park. I was also invited to train with the IRC and Yorkshire development teams and I really enjoyed this opportunity

I knew that the standard would be high at this event and my aim was to do as well as I could, but to enjoy the experience. It was a really big event I felt pretty nervous, but confident that I would do ok I had learned a lot through the season. I managed to get into a good position at the start of the swim and managed to finish the swim close to the front. I was really looking forward to a strong ride on the bike, but disaster struck at the start of the bike leg when my shoe came off my pedal and I lost all the ground I had made up on the swim. I had to work very hard to get back into the chasing bike group and that left me pretty tired going into the run, but I just kept going on the run and finished in 21st place. I was disappointed about the problem I had on the bike, but delighted with my performance overall.

I’m really looking forward to next season. Taking part in the series this season has given me a great deal of confidence and I have also managed to make a few new friends too!
