A guide to representing the Great Britain Age-Group Team in duathlon

Published:

With the international Age-Group season officially underway following the World Triathlon Winter Duathlon and Triathlon Championships earlier this month, it’s set to be a busy year for the Great Britain Age-Group Team in multisport.

The GB Age-Group Team offers all Home Nation members a unique opportunity to compete at World and European Championships in triathlon, duathlon, aquathlon, aquabike, winter triathlon, cross triathlon and cross duathlon.

In the first of our guides to representing the GB Age-Group Team, duathlon is the focus with the run-bike-run format offering one of the earliest opportunities to qualify for the 2023 GB Age-Group Team in 2022, along with a chance of being crowned British duathlon champion at the first British Championships of the year.

Around 300 athletes represented the Great Britain Age-Group Team at the 2021 World Triathlon Duathlon Championships in Spain, where the team claimed 40 medals across the standard and sprint distances.

The medal haul included 18 world champions being crowned including Lucy Bednall (FU20), Chris Nicoll (M50-54) and Jane Holmes (F65-69) over the shorter sprint distance, whilst Alex Doherty (M30-35), Warren Mason (M55-59) and Nora Haggart (F65-69) were among the gold medallists in the standard event.

Duathlon races see athletes run the first leg, cycle the second and then run again for the third and final section. The standard distance for a duathlon is a 10k run, 40k bike and 5k run, with races also covering sprint, middle distance and long distance equivalents.

Oulton Park is the venue for this year’s British Standard Distance Duathlon Championships where the first British champions of 2022 will be decided when athletes compete for the British duathlon titles on Sunday 20 March 2022.
