How are points calculated?

The South Central Junior Race Series is governed by the South Central Triathlon Regional Committee. All races are sanctioned by British Triathlon and therefore competitors and spectators must abide by the rules of the British Triathlon.

Points are calculated based on the winning time with the winner* receiving 1000 points across all multisport formats in the series (Triathlon, Aquathlon and Duathlon). Subsequent results are calculated by dividing the winning time by the recorded time for that athlete and multiplying the result by 1000 (eg winner in 18 mins 00 secs gets 1000pts,  2nd place finishes in 18 mins 36 secs.

18 mins 00 secs = 18.00 mins & 18 mins 36 secs = 18.60 mins

18.00/18.60 * 1000 = 968 and therefore the 2nd place finisher would receive 968 points for that race).

If a race is cancelled or is deemed not to have met the level of quality that we require from a race then the committee have the right to amend the number of points scored by the winner and the number of qualifying races to count in the series.

(*The winner is defined as the first South Central Athlete that is a member of British Triathlon, male and female over the line in each age category.)

IRC Qualification

Represent your region at the Inter Regional Championships

The Inter Regional Championships (IRC) comprise a weekend of racing by regional teams from throughout the UK at the British Triathlon’s Season Finale.

Each region takes a team of 16 athletes from the TriStar 2 and TriStar 3 categories (4 male and 4 female athletes from each age group, plus reserves). This year’s IRC will take place on the weekend of 14/15 September 2024 at Mallory Park, Leicestershire.

Both age groups - Tristar 2 and Tristar 3 - will race over a Heats and Finals format on the Saturday. With an A and B Final every athlete, irrespective of their heat finishing position, will get an opportunity to race twice. Race distances will remain the same across both heat and final and are reflected below; the interval between heat and final will be a minimum of 3 hours.

Saturday 14th September 2024

Separate Races for Open Category & Female Category Athletes

4 x Tristar 2 Open Athletes – Aquathlon: (300m swim/1.2km run) x 2 races (Heat & Final)

4 x Tristar 2 Female Athletes – Aquathlon: (300m swim/1.2km run) x 2 races (Heat & Final)
4 x Tristar 3 Open Athletes – Triathlon: (300m swim/2.6km bike/1.2km run) x 2 races (Heat & Final)

4 x Tristar 3 Female Athletes – Triathlon: (300m swim/2.6km bike/1.2km run) x 2 races (Heat & Final)

Sunday 15th September 2024

Team relays for all athletes, including reserves (20 x South Central Athletes) to compromise of swim/bike/run legs for each athlete.

Qualify for the South Central Team

South Central IRC Qualification

To be eligible for selection to the South Central Region IRC Team, athletes must be members of Triathlon England with South Central on their Membership Card as their registered region, any changes to athletes ‘region’ after 30th April 2024 will be discarded, new members to Triathlon England will have until 30th April 2024 to register.  Athletes looking for selection must be available to compete on 14th and 15th September 2024 and be able to travel on 13th September if necessary due to early morning start times.

The 2024 criteria for South Central region representation are designed on the following basis:

The primary means of qualification is through a single qualifying event.  This replicates the “on the day” nature of most senior selection processes.  However, we want to select the best athletes, and at junior levels we do not want to preclude selection due to misfortune or family commitments.  Some places will therefore be selected on wider criteria.  At the IRC, the TS2 athletes race an open water aquathlon (swim & run) format – therefore the primary qualifying event for TS2 athletes is also an open water aquathlon.  At the IRC, the TS3 athletes race an open water triathlon format – therefore the primary qualifying event for TS3 athletes is also an open water triathlon.

The IRC events are open water – athletes must have completed at least one of the open water events in the South Central Junior Series 2024 to be considered for selection.

The Team will be selected as follows:

For TS2 athletes*:

1. Lake 62 Open Water Aquathlon – South Central Winner

2. Lake 62 Open Water Aquathlon – South Central Runner-Up*

3. Best placed in the South Central TS2 Junior Series* (must include an Open Water event)

4. Discretionary pick based on a single performance or multiple performances in the South Central TS2 Junior Series

5. Reserve Athlete – Discretionary pick based on a single performance or multiple performances in the South Central TS2 Junior Series

For TS3 athletes*:

1. Eton Dorney Full Steam Open Water Triathlon – South Central Winner

2. Eton Dorney Full Steam Open Water Triathlon – South Central Runner-Up*

3. Best placed in the South Central TS3 Junior Series* (must include an Open Water event)

4. Discretionary pick based on a single performance or multiple performances in the South Central TS3 Junior Series

5. Reserve Athlete – Discretionary pick based on a single performance or multiple performances in the South Central TS3 Junior Series

*See supporting notes & scenarios below

Selections will be confirmed by the South Central Selection Panel (made up of the IRC Team Manager & South Central Regional Academy Lead), who will also select the 4th and reserve athletes.  The team selected will be notified by email by the 26th July.  Those who qualify will be invited to pre-IRC Training, details of which are to be confirmed.

Supporting Notes & Scenarios

  1. It is not necessary to complete all events in the events in the series, although it would be advantageous to do so.
  2. Any athlete wishing to qualify for the IRC team must have competed in at least one of the two open water events in the Junior Series.
  3. The selection criteria will be applied in the order set out above.  Therefore, if an athlete qualifies for the IRC team under more than one criteria, they will be selected for the team under the higher ranking criteria.  The lower ranking criteria would then move on to the next athlete on that basis.
  4. If either the Open Water Aquathlon and/or the Open Water Triathlon are cancelled or the events distances are significantly reduced for any reason (such that the Selection Panel considers the events no longer represents a suitable selection basis) the event based selection will be void and the relevant selections made on a discretionary basis by the Selection Panel.

The decision of the South Central Selection Panel will be final.  The provisions of the BTF Selection and Nomination Appeals Procedure do not apply in this case.  There will be no right of appeal, including in relation to any kind of mishap, whether within or outside of the athletes control, during any of the selection events.
