London Paratriathlon Coordinator – Haren Thillainathan

My role is to support para-triathletes in London and to encourage new people into the sport.

I myself am blind (Para Category 5, b1) having lost my sight at the beginning of 2015. Probably like many of you I became interested in para-triathlon after the 2016 Paralympics when the sport made its debut. I thought “I can do that!”, a few months later I found a triathlon taster session and shortly after this joined a local triathlon club (Windrush) who were brilliant in helping me to train.  My main challenge was learning to swim and getting used to running with a guide (I had not run after losing my sight) Five months after starting I entered my first event – the Crystal Palace sprint triathlon  in May 2017.  I have since completed a variety of triathlon, open water swims, run events and cycle sportifs and I am training for more in future I passionately believe my own experience shows that anyone can compete in triathlons with the right support.  I’ve made so many amazing friends since getting into triathlon and I would recommend it to anyone interested in sports and fitness.

If you have any questions about para-triathlon including, about my own experience don’t feel shy to ask! You can reach me on londonparatricoordinator@britishtriathlon.org
