British paratriathletes look ahead to World Triathlon Para Series Swansea

In the latest British Triathlon podcast, Meet the Medallists- the British Triathlon Paralympic stars, we hear from Tokyo Paralympic medallists Lauren Steadman, George Peasgood and Claire Cashmore.

As well as sharing their experiences from the Tokyo Games in the Meet the Medallists podcast, the medal-winning trio each share their anticipation for the history-making World Triathlon Para Series event in Swansea, 6 August, and how they hope it marks the start for more spectators and participants of the sport.

“Paratriathlon is being recognised as the incredible sport it is and for all the investment to be going purely into paratriathlon and into a stand-alone event, is really exciting,” said Claire Cashmore, Tokyo silver medallist and the athlete representative on the Swansea event board.

“It’s going to showcase how great the sport is, and I really hope we get an amazing crowd and it spirals into inspiring the next generation of athletes with a disability to get involved in triathlon.”

Tokyo bronze medallist George Peasgood said: “There’s going to be loads of para sports going on over the weekend and to have that as a showcase event for the sport, is going to be so exciting.

“Most of the time we’re part of an able-bodied world series or event, a lot of the time the people aren’t necessarily there for us… this will be an opportunity for para athletes and people with a disability to come down and watch as well.”

Lauren Steadman, Tokyo silver medalist said; “For paratriathletes to have our own race where all the focus is on us and preparation is on us it’s good for us and good for GB as hopefully we will get some more allocation spots and get athletes out to race against some of the big guys.

“I’m super excited as those who didn’t get to watch us last year [in Tokyo] can come and see us race.”

The World Triathlon Para Series event takes place on Saturday 6 August in Swansea and will be delivered by British Triathlon in collaboration with UK Sport, World Triathlon, Welsh Triathlon, the Welsh Government and Swansea City Council.
