British Technical Officials selected for Paris 2024

Great Britain’s Maisie Bancewicz and Duncan Hough have both been appointed as International Technical Officials for Paris 2024.

Bancewicz will be part of the team of Technical Officials at the Olympic Games, while Hough’s role will be at the Paralympic Games.

Bancewicz, who became the first Technical Official from Scotland to achieve World Triathlon’s Technical Official Level 3 qualification last year, has been a Technical Official at a number of major events including London 2012 and Tokyo 2020.

“It’s a huge honour to be nominated by British Triathlon and then selected by World Triathlon for the Olympic Games officiating team,” Bancewicz said. “The Games are the pinnacle for athletes and to be able to support the platform for them to deliver exceptional athletic performances is very special.

“I hope to be able to bring my experience from London, Tokyo, the Commonwealth Games and other major events to Paris. I’m very much looking forward to working with Technical Official colleagues from around the globe, and continuing to learn from and with them.”

The Olympic triathlon events at Paris 2024 will be held from 30 July to 5 August 2024, while a few weeks later the French capital will host the Paralympic Games where the paratriathlon medals will be decided on 1 and 2 September 2024.

Hough, who has been a Technical Official since 1999, will be one of the Technical Officials at the Paralympics having held similar roles at both the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympic Games and Head Referee for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

“I am really honoured to have been selected for the Paralympics for Paris 2024 as I have been fortunate enough to attend Olympics in the past but never a Paralympics, which is something that really excites me,” Hough said.

“Seeing how committed and strong these athletes are to overcome obstacles to compete at the level they do is truly inspiring and to see this at the highest level in Paris, makes me both excited and blessed and I want to deliver to ensure they have the greatest experience possible. A few home medals wouldn’t go a miss either.”

A total of 28 Technical Officials have been selected to officiate at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and 27 Technical Officials have been appointed to the Paralympic Games, representing 43 national federations and all five continents.

For the first time, 50 per cent of the Officials selected for both the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games are female, increasing the percentage of female Technical Officials from the 47% women that officiated at the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“With this selection, we are proving once more not only that we have a strong and committed team of officials and staff members, but also that we are trusting and empowering our female officials, as we have been doing since our debut at the Olympics in Sydney 2000,” World Triathlon President, Marisol Casado said.

“I know that the bar is set high, but I am convinced that the commitment, hard work and dedication of every single person in this list will be once more key to ensure that the triathlon and paratriathlon events will shine more than ever in Paris.”

Alongside the appointments for Paris 2024, World Triathlon and Europe Triathlon have also announced the International Technical Officials who will officiate at the 2023 Krakow-Małopolska European Games from 21 June to 2 July.

Howard Vine has previously been announced as the Technical Delegate for this event where he will be joined by two more Technical Officials from Great Britain.

Drew Matheson and Karen Smith have both been named as part of the team of International Technical Officials for the multisport event.
