Brits head to Bergen for latest World Triathlon Cup

Published:

A visit to Norway for the World Triathlon Cup Bergen headlines the weekend action for British triathletes this weekend, but there’s also Europe Triathlon Junior Cup and IRONMAN events with British interest.

Back in the UK, the Triathlon England National Club Relays will again provide a brilliant spectacle in Nottingham where clubs will be going head-to-head to win national titles.

World Triathlon Cup Bergen (28 August)

Norway is the host of the latest World Triathlon Cup event which will see six British triathletes line up on the start line in Bergen.

Jonny Brownlee will race for the first time since AJ Bell 2022 World Triathlon Championship Series Leeds as he makes his return following the bike crash in his home race which also ruled him out of the Commonwealth Games.

Joining the three-time Olympic medallist on the elite men’s start list is Harry Leleu and James Chantler-Mayne.

This will be Chantler-Mayne’s first World Triathlon Cup start and only his second international race as a senior, while Leleu – who competed at the Europe Triathlon Championships in Munich – has already raced at two World Triathlon Cup events in 2022, including a top-20 finish in Pontevedra.

On the elite women’s start line will be Kate Waugh, Olivia Mathias and Sophia Green. Waugh was fifth at the last World Triathlon Cup in Pontevedra which followed mixed relay gold and a 12th place finish at World Triathlon Championship Series Hamburg.

Mathias and Green both competed at the Commonwealth Games, for Wales and Scotland, respectively. Silver as part of the Team Wales Mixed Relay team was Mathias’ third podium of the season including a win at the Europe Triathlon Cup in Kitzbuhel, while Green heads to Norway off the back of bronze at the British Elite Triathlon Championships.

Both of the races will be contested over the sprint distance with the elite women starting at 13:35 (UK Time) followed by the elite men at 15:50 and they will both be live on https://www.triathlonlive.tv/.

Triathlon England National Club Relays (27 August)

A highlight of the swim, bike and run calendar for over 30 years, the HUUB National Triathlon Relays will again provide a thrilling – and at times a potentially chaotic – spectacle of swim, bike and run at Holme Pierpoint in Nottingham.

Over 380 teams have been put together to take part in this unique event which will see club members, friends, families and colleagues join together to each complete a 500m swim, 15km bike and 5km for their team.

Unlike the traditional mixed relay format, all team members complete their own swim first, once tagged by the previous team member, before then all taking on the bike leg and after the last team member has completed the bike it’s then onto the run for the final leg which each team member will then complete.

There will also be national titles up for grabs with the event hosting the Triathlon England National Club Relays with national champions crowned in the mixed, male only and female only team events. All members of the teams must be a Triathlon England member and part of an affiliated Triathlon England club to be eligible for a medal.
