World Triathlon Championship Series heads to Cagliari

Published:

Cagliari hosts the third round of the 2024 World Triathlon Championship Series with nine British athletes taking their place on the start line, including current World Champion Beth Potter.

The women’s race sees Potter begin her defence of the world title she won in Pontevedra. The confirmed 2024 Olympian comes into this race after winning the first ever E world Triathlon Championships back in April in London, picking up her second world title in as many races.

Joining her on the start list is Georgia Taylor-Brown. A winner in Cagliari last year, she comes into the race off the back of a second-place finish at World Triathlon Indoor Cup Lievin in March. This race is also Taylor-Brown’s first World Triathlon Championship Series race since a seventh-place finish in Montreal in June last year.

Kate Waugh is back on the World Triathlon Championship Series start line after her tenth-place finish in Yokohama. Her best result of the year so far is a second-place finish at 2024 Europe Triathlon Cup Melilla.

Sophie Coldwell, who became a World Triathlon Championship Series race winner in Yokohama last year, returns to the sport’s premier competition after winning a bronze medal at Europe Triathlon Cup Melilla in April.

Winner of 2024 World Triathlon Cup Hong Kong, Sian Rainsley, is also on the start list as she races in Cagliari for the first time.

Live coverage of the women’s race gets underway from 10:00 BST on BBC iPlayer and the Red Button as well as on Triathlon Live

The men’s race sees 2023 World Triathlon Championship Series Cagliari winner Alex Yee back in action. Yee, who was the first British male named on Team GB for this summer’s Olympic Games, comes into the race off the back of a win at Lindahls Pro+ Triathlon Series, Fréjus earlier this month. He’s joined on the start line by Max Stapley, who was a silver medallist at the first ever E World Triathlon Championships back in April before he took gold at World Triathlon Cup Chengdu two weeks later.

Sam Dickinson is the third Brit on the start line in Italy. He’s had a busy start to the season racing four times already in 2024, with his best result a fourth-place finish at E World Triathlon Championships London. Barclay Izzard also returns to action in Italy. This marks his first race of 2024 season, with his best result in 2023 coming at World Triathlon Cup Karlovy Vary where he finished sixth. He was also on the start line for 2023 World Triathlon Championship Series Cagliari and finished 25th.

Hugo Milner makes it five Brits on the start line as he races just two weeks after finishing 39th at World Triathlon Championship Series Yokohama. This will be his seventh race of a busy 2024 season, with his best result coming at 2024 Europe Triathlon Cup Quarteira, where he put in the fastest run time of the race to claim victory.

The race gets underway from 14:15 BST live on the BBC Red Button and iPlayer as well as Triathlon Live.
